Is the only way to get a front end alignment by machine? Or can it be done manually?

A guy told me he can give me and alignment for 40 bucks. He said he can do it without a machine. Is this true or a rip off?

If he is smart , he can get you close and might accidentally get it right . My dad was a brake and front end man , learned in the Army . He was the lead mechanic for Brake-o in Dallas and it use to amaze me at how close and accurate he could do it with a tape measure . He did side jobs at home and after front end work , he would do this . I know some of them never took it to a machine and never had abnormal tire wear . It can be done , but unless you really are confident of this guy , take it to somewhere there is a machine .
